How we score it

Every rating measures the live forecast against what the 1st Street Jetty actually needs — the break works on a NE swell, west offshore wind, and a low-to-rising tide. The closer the day lines up, the higher the score.

Swell period — the #1 signal. 8s+ groundswell = real, organised waves; under 6s = mush.
Wind angle — offshore (W) grooms the face; onshore (E) wrecks it.
Tide state — the sandbar fires on the push off low tide.

Where the data comes from

Tides from NOAA CO-OPS; swell, period, direction and wind from the Open-Meteo marine model — refreshed every morning, free, no third-party paywall.

When a source blips we retry, then carry forward the last real reading stamped “updated Nh ago · refreshing” — never a guess. Only a true cold start shows “unavailable”. Stale-but-labelled ≠ fake.
